OTHER TYPES OF LEAVE
OTHER TYPES OF LEAVE
MITRE follows all state and city leave requirements. In cases where statutory leave is more generous than a MITRE leave, eligible employees will receive the statutory benefits.

CIVIC LEAVE
We truly embrace serving the public interest. Benefits-eligible employees have eight hours each year to volunteer time at the charity of their choice.
BEREAVEMENT LEAVE
Employees who experience the loss of a loved one can use up to 24 hours of Bereavement Leave following a loss. Bereavement time is available with approval from their manager.

SABBATICAL LEAVE
Designed for relaxation or to pursue personal interests, after seven years of service, regular full- and part-time employees are eligible for up to eight weeks of Sabbatical Leave to recharge, or up to five months of Sabbatical Leave for school or teaching. After taking a sabbatical, employees must wait at least five years before taking another. Employees can use PTOB hours to get paid during a sabbatical or take the time off unpaid. MITRE continues to contribute to health and other benefits during the leave.
MILITARY LEAVE
Eligible service members will receive, per calendar year:
- Benefit Entitlement: 100% of pay for first 13 weeks; 50% of pay for remaining 39 weeks. Max continuous deployment is 18 months.
- Initial Military Leave Period - During the first 13 weeks of documented Military Leave, employees will receive a 100% Salary Differential Pay benefit.
- Salary Differential Pay equals the difference between an employee’s MITRE salary (“MITRE Salary”) and the total basic military and longevity pay (exclusive of allowances) employees receive during their Initial Military Leave Period (“Military Pay”).
- During this Initial Military Leave Period, MITRE will continue to pay employees 100% of their MITRE Salary and employees will agree to repay MITRE for any Military Pay received in excess of their MITRE Salary (“Excess Differential Pay”) within 30 days after the conclusion of their Military Leave.
- In addition, to ensure that any service member on longer continuous deployments has leave coverage and benefits, we have extended the maximum duration of paid leave to 18 months.

How to Request These Other Leave Types

All employees will be granted military leave in accordance with the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA) (and any applicable state laws) if they are called for active duty in any of the uniformed services, including performing their annual reserve training.
If you take a leave of absence under the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Act (USERRA), MITRE will continue payment of their share of benefit premiums for up to 18 months. You will need to work with Absence Management to determine if you want payroll contributions to continue while on military leave. After 18 months, you may elect to continue group health care coverage for yourself (and your covered dependents, if any) for an additional 18 months under COBRA. At that time, you should receive a COBRA notice from the plan explaining your benefits.
USERRA continuation coverage will terminate earlier if one of the following events occurs: • You lose your USERRA rights due to a dishonorable discharge or other conduct specified in USERRA; or • You fail to return to work, or to apply for reemployment, following the completion of your service in the uniformed services within the time required by. Upon your return to work from military leave, USERRA provides employee and previously covered dependents the right to immediate reinstatement of all of MITRE’s health insurance coverage. The health plan cannot impose a waiting period and cannot exclude you based on preexisting conditions. The only exception to USERRA’s prohibition of exclusions is for an illness or injury determined by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs to have been incurred in or aggravated during your performance of service in the uniformed services since this would be covered by the military health plan.
